Project 10 East

Project 10 East sounds futuristic. Made up of a dozen students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, it is the only gay and lesbian youth support group in a public high school in New England. Cambridge has a history of placing human-rights and civil-rights issues in the forefront. The group is meant to be a support for gay and lesbians students and the school itself has a policy on anti-gay harassment. Approximately 30% of teen suicides are committed by homosexuals, and many homeless youth are also gay. The aim of Project 10 east is to train young high school students to go into classrooms to deal with homophobic incidents and help teachers and other students talk about homophobia as a social issue. Project 10 East is integrated as part of a club activity in the school. It has been founded by Al Ferreira, photography teacher at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Cambridge, MA (USA).
